Stately and graceful, the American Elm's branches flow like water in a fountain. It's known for it's golden fall foliage.

  • Known for prolific seed production, it's an important food source for songbirds, rabbits and squirrels
  • Dutch elm disease wiped out most of the American elms in the 1940-50's
  • Can grow up to 80 - 100 feet tall with a max diameter of 7 feet
  • Can live up to 300 years
  • Trunks were used by Native Americans for canoes

  • Access trees by a wide trail on the ridge or a path at lake level
  • Enjoy vistas of the lake from every tree, whether at water’s edge or from the forest above
  • Spot water-loving wildlife like deer, turkeys, swans, loons and eagles

All of the trees in Shoreline Vista enjoy lakefront views. Some pepper the banks of Fish Lake and others climb a gentle slope towards the rest of the forest, providing a unique vantage point from the ledge above.

Most trees in this section are accessible from a wide trail along the ridge. Others can be reached by a path at lake level. In warmer months, a pair of common loons has been frequently spotted in the lake, along with the occasional swan or bald eagle overhead.
