Majestic and long-lived, White Oaks are strong and hardy. In fall, their leaves become a bold red wine color.

  • Hard, durable, decay-resistant wood used to make barrels, furniture, lumber and historical ships
  • State tree of Illinois, Maryland and Connecticut
  • Known for its large size and attractive foliage
  • Can live to be over 600 years old

  • Access trees by a wide trail on the ridge or a path at lake level
  • Enjoy vistas of the lake from every tree, whether at water’s edge or from the forest above
  • Spot water-loving wildlife like deer, turkeys, swans, loons and eagles

All of the trees in Shoreline Vista enjoy lakefront views. Some pepper the banks of Fish Lake and others climb a gentle slope towards the rest of the forest, providing a unique vantage point from the ledge above.

Most trees in this section are accessible from a wide trail along the ridge. Others can be reached by a path at lake level. In warmer months, a pair of common loons has been frequently spotted in the lake, along with the occasional swan or bald eagle overhead.
