Known to be one tough tree, this Chicago-area native tree can withstand strong wind and heat, and attracts birds and other small animals who love to feed off the fruits.

  • Its purple-brown berries ripen in late summer and persist through winter
  • Can grow up to 100 feet tall with a max diameter of 20 inches
  • Under ideal conditions, Hackberry trees have a life expectancy between 150 - 200 years
  • Because of their deep roots, Hackberry trees are known to bring erosion under control and help minimize the risk of flooding near riverbeds
  • The bark of Hackberry trees can be characterized by the cork-like ridges on its trunk and branches

  • Easily access gently-sloping trails, bordered by hills and valleys that create a sense of seclusion
  • Meet some of the largest and oldest trees in this most pristine part of the forest
  • Aptly named, this section has a golden hue on the forest floor, cast by filtered sunlight

Located at the far eastern end of the property, this section is bordered by small hills and valleys, providing a unique vantage point and sense of seclusion from the rest of the forest.

Deep in the woods with trails winding through gentle slopes, Cathedral Grove is the most untouched part of the forest. It’s perfect for enjoying moments of quiet reflection.

Clearings and a naturally occurring basin create space amongst some of the largest and oldest trees in the forest. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting a golden hue on the forest floor.

At the forest entryway just off the main drive, Cathedral Grove feels deep in the woods yet is still easily accessible.
