Rare and resilient, Southwestern White Pine charms passersby with its silky needles.

  • Can grow up to 90 feet tall and up to 3.5 feet in diameter
  • A large, beautiful tree with long, soft needles and an abundance of large, slender cones
  • Provides winter habitat for wildlife
  • Its large seeds are eaten by many small mammals and birds
  • Tough and highly drought-tolerant

  • Get here easily from the Welcome House and parking – yet feel deep in the quiet of the forest
  • Enjoy a rare treat of fern thickets in arid Arizona, along with aspens, firs and pines
  • Spot wildlife among the aspen groves, and look up to see bluebirds, flickers and chickadees

The most conveniently located section of the forest, Homestead Grove is a short, easy walk from the Welcome House and parking area.

Soft thickets of bracken fern carpet the forest floor. The lush understory in this area of the forest is a rare find in Arizona, as it only grows at higher elevations where summers are cool and moist.

This section has a true “heart of the forest” feel, where quiet surroundings amplify the sounds of nature. Homestead Grove feels deep in the woods yet is still easily accessible.
